The Shendong Ecological Conservation Science Popularization Base and the National Key Laboratory for Water Resources Conservation and Utilization in Coal Mining (Shendong Base) under Shendong Coal, a subsidiary of China Energy, were included in the List of Certified Science Popularization and Education Bases of the Coal Industry (2022-2026) recently unveiled by China Coal Society.
The Shendong Ecological Conservation Science Popularization Base, covering an area of 4,000 hectares in the subsidence area of Halagou Coal Mine in Daliuta Town, Shenmu City, Shaanxi Province, is China’s first large-scale “mountain-river-forest-farmland-lake-grassland-desert” ecological conservation demonstration project built in a coal mining subsidence area. Focusing on the protection of the originally fragile ecosystem of Halagou Coal Mine and the ecological governance of its subsidence area, the project has built 62 demonstration sites for scientific research, pilot measures, ecological industry, and ecological civilization construction under the theme of “green, hi-tech, and cultural development”, involving elements such as mountains, rivers, forests, farmland, lakes, grasslands, and deserts. The key achievements of the project include an integrated monitoring system for geological environment and land reclamation, a sea-buckthorn ecological industry demonstration base, a geological environment and land reclamation demonstration garden, a botanical garden, and a holistic land harnessing project. It has developed into a systematic environmental governance demonstration area that features harmony between man and nature, between industry and ecology, and between enterprises and local communities.
The National Key Laboratory for Water Resources Conservation and Utilization in Coal Mining (Shendong Base), approved by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology in September 2015, focuses on the research of mining water conservation, mining water treatment and utilization, and mining area ecological damage reduction and restoration. With facilities built in both Beijing and Shendong Coal headquarters, the laboratory is also committed to science popularization exhibition, with emphasis on technologies for coal mining ground ecological damage reduction and restoration, experimental platforms and equipment used for scientific research, as well as major achievements, research teams and awards of the company in the field of coal mining water resources conservation and utilization.
In recent years, relying on its research platforms and venues, Shendong Coal has constantly enhanced its public service capability in science popularization and innovated carriers for science popularization, making great contributions to improving the scientific literacy of coal mining practitioners and promoting science outreach in the coal industry.
