Recently, the technological achievement Key Technology and Application Demonstration of Coal Chemical Gasification Coarse Slag for Saline-Alkali Soil Remediation, initiated by Xinjiang Chemical, a subsidiary of China Shenhua, successfully passed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal conducted by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF), reaching internationally advanced standards.

This project innovatively utilizes industrial solid wastes, such as coal chemical gasification slag, biochemical sludge, and fly ash, to synergistically produce a low-cost saline-alkali soil amendment, pioneering a new pathway for the resource utilization of industrial solid waste. It has created a unique "vegetation layer - topsoil layer - water-retaining layer - salt-isolating layer" ecological restoration system, significantly enhancing the soil's water and nutrient retention capacity. After three years of continuous monitoring, a 200-mu demonstration base established in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has delivered remarkable results, including a 15% increase in soil moisture content, with organic matter and available phosphorus reaching standards, a 1.7-fold increase in Tamarix plant height, and a vegetation coverage over 85%, effectively curbing soil erosion in mining areas while simultaneously achieving the triple value of solid waste consumption, land greening, and ecological restoration. The project has accumulated eight authorized invention patents, published five SCI/EI papers, and formulated multiple industry and group standards. The industry-university-research collaboration has created a benchmark solution for the ecological utilization of industrial solid waste, providing a replicable and scalable green technology solution for land management in the arid and saline-alkali regions of Northwest China.

This technology, utilizing industrial solid waste to restore saline-alkali wastelands and painting an oasis landscape with technology, will continue to support ecological conservation and green, low-carbon, high-quality development in Northwest China.
