Recently, the National Energy Administration announced the “Top Ten Sci-tech Innovations of Energy Industry in 2024”, with the “630 MW Ammonia Co-firing with Coal Power Generation Technology” initiated by China Shenhua successfully making the list. This achievement symbolizes a vivid practice for China Shenhua’s corporate philosophy of “Enterprises Shoulder Responsibility for Innovation” in recent years.
Since 2023, the project team, composed of members from China Shenhua and CHN Energy Yuedian Taishan Power Generation Co., Ltd., has attempted extensive methods for research, development, design, engineering implementation, operation debugging and test verification of technological approach, equipment and system for ammonia co-firing with coal combustion of 630 MW boiler.
This technology enables stable 10%, 20% and 30% ammonia combustion of coal-fired boilers under multiple load conditions, such as 180 MW, 300 MW and 600 MW, offering a CHN Energy solution for carbon reduction at the source of coal-fired units in China. Taking a 600 MW coal-fired unit as an example, with annual 4,000 operating hours and 10% ammonia combustion at full load, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 183,700 tonnes per year, showcasing significant carbon reduction effectiveness.
