On August 31, Shendong Coal Group joined hands with Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) academician Peng Suping and his team to establish Shendong Research Base. A demonstration project for the protection of the ecological environment of the Yellow River basin and the low-carbon development of carbon-intensive industries after China announced its pledges to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, the research base represents a step of Shendong Coal on its new journey to pursue green development and implement the major national strategy of promoting ecological conservation and high-quality development along the Yellow River.
Over the years, Academician Peng’s team has leaded or participated in a number of ecological research projects organized by Shendong Coal and scored remarkable achievements that advanced the development of Shendong Coal. In particular, two scientific and research projects, namely Key Technologies on the Advanced Exploitation of Underground Water and the Protection of Surface Ecological Environment of Mines in Ecologically Vulnerable Areas and Technology and Application of Microbial Remediation on Land Reclamation in Arid and Semi-arid Areas in Western China, won the second prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award.
Currently, Shendong Coal is committed to building the Halagou Innovation Base that spearheads the protection of local mountains, rivers, forests as well as farmlands, lakes, grasslands and deserts, the Bu’ertai Innovation Base that values green mountains and clear rivers, and the Shangwan Innovation Base dedicated to promoting harmonious co-existence between human and nature. In addition, the company deepens its studies on ecological conservation and the technologies, management and models of high-quality development, and attaches great importance to the establishment of such demonstration bases.
The studies and the bases will help solve pressing problems of ecological protection in the coal industry along the Yellow River and in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia, and make breakthroughs in high-quality development. The Shendong Research Base will expand the company’s talent pool on ecological protection, cultivate talents and professionals in the field, and greatly enhance the technological prowess of Shendong Coal Group on ecological protection.
The restoration of the ecological environment of coal bases along the Yellow River is an integral part of the ecological recovery of the Yellow River basin. “Coal companies can make their contributions by pursuing intelligent and green mining, reducing carbon emissions and absorbing carbon dioxide during processes like coal-fired power generation and the production of coal-to-liquids,” said Peng. “Shendong Coal has abundant technological experience in such areas and is an ideal place for relevant researches.”
Peng and his team will engage in researches on technologies employed by coal companies to reduce carbon emissions and transform such waste gas into production resources and materials.
